BROOKLYN (April 25, 2025) — It is with profound sadness that we at Higher Heights for America mourn the passing of Alexis M. Herman — a trailblazer, a champion for working people, and a powerful example of Black women’s leadership in action.

After the inauguration of President Bill Clinton in 1992, Alexis Herman made history as the first African American woman appointed Assistant to the President and Director of the White House Office of Public Liaison. In 1997, she again shattered barriers when she was sworn in as the first African American to be appointed and confirmed as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor.

Her family announced her passing on Friday morning.

Higher Heights President & CEO Glynda Carr issued the following statement in honor of her life and legacy:

“As the first African American to serve as U.S. Secretary of Labor, Alexis Herman broke barriers and opened doors for so many women and communities historically left behind. Her life’s work — from the civil rights movement to the highest levels of public service — embodied the values of justice, equity, and opportunity that continue to guide our mission at Higher Heights.

Secretary Herman’s dedication to advancing labor rights, uplifting women in the workforce, and empowering marginalized voices has left an indelible legacy. She showed us what’s possible when Black women lead with vision, compassion, and unwavering determination.

We send our deepest condolences to her family, loved ones, and the countless people she mentored and inspired. We honor her memory by continuing the work she championed — building power, creating change, and ensuring every Black woman and girl knows that her leadership matters.

May she rest in power and peace.”
