Higher Heights for America

WASHINGTON, DC (July 17, 2021) Today, Glynda C. Carr, the President and CEO of Higher Heights for America — the only national organization exclusively dedicated to harnessing Black women’s political power from the voting booth to elected office — issued the following statement on voting rights after today’s roundtable meeting held by Vice President Kamala Harris with Black women leaders to discuss the issue.

“The attempt to thwart our voting rights is a true travesty. At a time when America should be leading the world in demonstrating how a nation that holds up the ideals of equality and freedom has been able to thrive and flourish, we are instead having internal turmoil over the basic fundamental rights that make up the very fabric of our democracy.

I appreciate very much that Vice President Harris is leading on this issue and that she invited these dynamic Black women-led organizations and leaders to have a dialogue on the attempts to roll back voting rights. We must all work together to fight the attack on our vote and pass national standards to make the promise of our democracy real for us all. She is the right woman to lead this charge.

This is not an issue that only impacts Black people. Whatever your color, background or zip code, most of us believe that voters pick our leaders — our leaders do not get to pick their voters. When it comes to our elections, we want a transparent process we can trust, where Americans have equal freedom to vote. Only when we all come together, we can ensure all Americans can safely and freely cast our ballots so that every voice is heard and our elections reflect the will of the people.”
