The nation’s only organization dedicated to providing Black women with a political home thanks Speaker Pelosi for her leadership and unwavering commitment to the country over three and a half decades

BROOKLYN (November 17, 2022) – Earlier today, Nancy Pelosi, the first woman to become Speaker of the House, announced that she would not seek a leadership position in January. Pelosi, whose 35-year career in Congress has included two historic stints as Speaker and a number of critical legislative milestones, will continue to serve in the House.

Higher Heights President & CEO, Glynda Carr, released the following statement reflecting on the importance of Speaker Pelosi’s decades of leadership:

“Today, Higher Heights celebrates Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s bittersweet decision to step down from Democratic leadership in the House. As the first woman to become Speaker of the House, there is no doubt that Speaker Pelosi has paved the way for women at every level of government and has inspired generations to run for office and better their communities. Through her decades of courageous leadership, we have been able to make progress on so many important issues facing Americans, including the passage of the Affordable Care Act, the American Rescue Plan, and many more crucial pieces of legislation. While we are saddened to see her take a step back, we are thankful for her support of Black women’s representation and voices within Congress, and we know she will continue to use her influence in this space moving forward.”
