Higher Heights for America enthusiastically endorses Brenda Lawrence for Michigan’s 14th Congressional District.

“Brenda Lawrence personifies the #ChisholmEffect through historic election as mayor of Southfield, Michigan and her advocacy on behalf of the voiceless such as her work to make Southfield a greener and healthier city.  We are excited at the opportunity to send another voice to Washington, D.C. that will represent the myriad of issues effecting Black women, their families and their communities,” said Kimberly Peeler-Allen, Co-Founder of Higher Heights.

Brenda Lawrence a three-term Southfield, Michigan mayor was the first Black and first female to serve as mayor in this Detroit suburb.  Her record of serving as a staunch advocate for building and sustaining healthy communities began long before she was elected to office emphasizing the need to grow and support the leadership pipeline for Black women.

She raised her voice for the victims of the mortgage crisis and in support of the working families in the auto industry in 2008 when she testified in front of the House Oversight Committee on two separate occasions.

In addition to her leadership in the Mayor’s office, Lawrence continues to support and highlight other outstanding women in the Southfield area through her television show Today’s Woman

Higher Heights is thrilled to join the coalition of national women’s organizations in supporting Brenda Lawrence’s candidacy.  Together, we are working toward parity and a more representative democracy.
