Higher Heights for America

BROOKLYN (November 30, 2021) – On what would have been late Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm’s 97th birthday, Higher Heights for America, the only national organization providing Black women with a political home exclusively dedicated to harnessing their power to expand Black women’s elected representation and voting participation, and advance progressive policies, announced its 2021 Chisholm List.

In 1968, Chisholm became the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress, representing New York’s 12th congressional district for seven terms from 1969 to 1983. Chisholm’s life was one that left an indelible mark on American politics, especially when it came to inspiring countless other Black women to pursue their political leadership goals.

The organization is honoring twenty-one Black women who have fought to break down barriers and lead this country forward to build a representative democracy, just like Chisholm.

The 21 women on the list have fought to break down barriers and lead this country forward to build a representative democracy. This year’s honorees include Vice President Kamala Harris, Congresswoman Cori Bush (MO-01), Mayor of St. Louis, Tishaura Jones and Mayor-Elect of Durham, Elaine O’Neal, and many other trailblazers!

“The women on this list represent the idea that Black women are the 21st-century architects of our democracy. As they walk in Shirley Chisholm’s footsteps, they’re paving the way for the next generation of Black women leadership ready to lead this country to higher heights,” said Glynda C. Carr, President, and CEO of Higher Heights.
