Higher Heights for America enthusiastically endorses Stacey Abrams to become the next governor of Georgia. Abrams would be the first Black woman elected governor in our nation’s 241-year history. Her victory will be the quintessential manifestation of leadership that reflects an increasingly diverse populace in the South and across the country.
We know that by electing strong leaders who have a vision and commitment to strengthening and investing in police departments, school systems, infrastructure projects and economic development we can change the landscape of our largest urban centers and help Black women, their families and communities thrive. That is way, Higher Heights is investing in a 2020 strategy to elect more Black women to executive office at the state and municipal level and Abrams represents the possibilities that exist to build and support a pipeline of Black women ready to run and lead.
Our support of Abrams goes far beyond the historic significance of her candidacy. She is supremely prepared to serve as Georgia’s chief executive.
Abrams is currently the House Minority Leader for the Georgia General Assembly and represents the 89th House District which covers part of Atlanta and suburban DeKalb County. She is the first woman to lead either party in the Georgia General Assembly and is the first African-American to lead in the House of Representatives. Abrams serves on the Appropriations, Ethics, Judiciary Non-Civil, Rules, and Ways & Means committees.
First elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 2006, Abrams quickly became known for her expertise and ability to explain complicated tax and legal questions, and she earned a reputation for working across party lines to pass legislation. In 2010, Abrams became House Minority Leader and has led the caucus to promote and pass legislation to increase educational opportunity, promote economic security, and improve the quality of life for all Georgians. The legislative accomplishment Abrams is most proud of is an increase in funding to grandparents and other family members who take in children whose parents are not able to care for them.
Beyond the chamber, Abrams’ personal commitment to expanding and empowering the electorate is exhibited through her founding of the New Georgia Project in 2014 that is leading the statewide effort to register 800,000 voters of color by 2024.
“Stacey Abrams is an exceptional candidate whose experience working in bipartisan collaborative ways to advance the issues and policies that will allow Black women, their families and communities to thrive in the state of Georgia is needed now more than ever in the executive office. We know that her experience and vision for Georgia will reshape what leadership looks like in the South and across the nation,” stated Kimberly Peeler-Allen, Co-Founder of Higher Heights for America.
