Sojourner Truth Legacy Project - "Women in Politics: Seizing the Gavel" Washington Convention Center, Room 144-BC
Panel Description: There are 102 women currently serving in the 113th Congress and many more women serve as elected officials at the state and local levels. However, not a single African American woman serves in the U.S. Senate or as a U.S. Governor. In fact, only 16 of the 435 members of the U.S. House of Representatives are African American women.
The panel is focused on creating long-term strategies to analyze, expand, support and mentor women of color seeking to become or currently serving as elected officials; as well as strengthen their political participation. Higher Heights’ Co-Founder Glynda C. Carr will join the panel to discuss the findings of their recent report, “The Status of Black Women in America Politics.”
