Lt. Governor
New Jersey

Higher Heights for America is excited to endorse Sheila Oliver to become the next Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey.  If elected, Sheila would become only the 3rd Black woman to become Lieutenant Governor in our nation’s history.

Born and raised in New Jersey, Sheila has served in the New Jersey General Assembly since 2004.  From 2010 to 2014, she served as the 169th Speaker of the New Jersey Assembly, the third most powerful elected official in the state and is currently Speaker Emeritus.  Sheila was  New Jersey’s first African American woman to serve as Assembly Speaker and only the second Black woman in U.S. history to lead a legislative house, following now Congresswoman Karen Bass who served as Speaker of the California State Assembly.

Known as a tireless advocate for social justice, economic equality and healthy and safe communities, Sheila has taken on the NRA to advocate for common sense gun safety measures and overridden Governor Christie’s vetoes to defund Planned Parenthood.  As Speaker, Sheila signed off on the Assembly’s Transportation committee’s subpoena power that led to the uncovering of the now infamous “Bridgegate” scandal that ultimately sent several members of Governor Christie’s administration to prison.

Sheila’s dedication to the people of New Jersey is not limited to her government service.  She was one of the founders of the Newark Coalition for Low Income Housing which successfully sued the Newark Housing Authority and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in federal court to block the demolition of low income housing in the city without a plan to replace it.  Through her work on several college campuses and service on the East Orange Board of Education, Sheila is committed to ensuring that all the residents of New Jersey have access to high quality education as a gateway to economic opportunity.

“In the spirit of Shirley Chisholm, Sheila Oliver has been a Black woman who has lead in an unbought and unbossed fashion throughout her career.  We know she will carry the priorities of Black women, their families and communities with her into the New Jersey Executive Chamber,” stated Kimberly Peeler-Allen, Co-Founder of Higher Heights for America.
